Terry Laakso
Terry Laakso is an artist, composer, researcher, and inventor of neurophysiological methods whose artistic career spanning more than 40 years, together with extensive work in Mexico and Spain, has laid the foundation for an entirely new neurophysiological system.
Throughout his career, Laakso has developed several original artistic techniques and visual styles that connect color, light, sound, rhythm, and space with responses of the nervous system.
He is a pioneer of neurophysiological color, sound, light, and spatial methods, as well as the creator of the world's first neurophysiological sensory environment method.
TERRY–NORA® is the first method to integrate colors, sounds, light, and visual space with the physiology of the nervous system.
The method is based on autonomic nervous system responses, focusing on how a sensory environment influences a person even before conscious thought occurs.
Laakso's work does not emphasize the creator, but rather the physiology of the nervous system: measurable, repeatable, and clearly identifiable mechanisms through which colors, sounds, light, and visual space can be understood in a new way.
Its purpose is to provide educators, trainers, artists, therapists, and organizations with practical tools to reduce overload, enhance concentration, and support recovery and well-being.
TERRY–NORA® — a neurophysiological system that makes the nervous system visible and the environment understandable.

Terry Laakso is the creator of the world's first neurophysiological method for color, sound, and visual environments, the registered TERRY–NORA® Method. The method evolved over the course of a career spanning more than four decades, with its decisive moment of emergence occurring in 2018 in the fishing village of Santoña in northern Spain. From that point onward, the system continued to expand and deepen, integrating art, science, and nervous system research into a unified framework through neurophysiological studies conducted during the 2020s.
Between 2014 and 2015, Laakso conducted intensive research into flamenco dance, music, and rhythm in Spain. He traveled with renowned flamenco artists during major performances, documented their lives through video production, and analyzed the neurophysiological effects of flamenco rhythms on movement, spatial perception, and nervous system dynamics.
Throughout his career, Laakso has held more than one hundred art exhibitions, and his works have been presented both in Finland and internationally. He also appeared on television between 1989 and 2007, where his art and research attracted broad public interest.
Over the course of his artistic career, Laakso has created more than 3,000 works representing different styles and creative periods. His works are included in the collections of the President of the Republic of Finland, as well as numerous private collectors and corporate collections.
Laakso has composed music since 1983, investigating the neurophysiological effects of sound, rhythm, and the nervous system's responses to different frequencies. This work later became a central foundation of his NeuroMelodia research.
Laakso lived for 25 years in Mexico and Spain, residing in a total of 14 different cities, and has become familiar with more than 160 cities across three continents. During this international experience, he explored cultures, architecture, the structure of both historical and contemporary cities, color environments, soundscapes, and the ways people live within and experience space.
Today, Laakso focuses entirely on wellness courses and educational programs for urban organizations based on the neurophysiological system he has developed.
He also provides training for artists graduating from art academies and art schools, offering advanced neurophysiological knowledge of color that is not taught within any other educational system.
This extensive body of research, encompassing the interaction of cultures, architecture, light, color, sound, health, and the nervous system, has been a fundamental part of the development of the TERRY–NORA® Method.
The method unites art, science, and neurophysiology into a single framework that explains how colors, sounds, and visual structures influence the human autonomic nervous system.

Terry Laakso's research and educational work have been built upon measurable scientific studies and multidisciplinary analysis across a wide range of scientific fields. His work extends beyond artistic observation and is based on systematic investigation conducted over more than four decades.
His studies and research have included:
-
Neurophysiology
-
Neurological Effects of Color
-
Neurodynamic Effects of Sound and Rhythm
-
The Influence of Space and Light on the Autonomic Nervous System
-
Cultural and Civilizational History

Foundations of the Methods
This long-term body of research formed the foundation for:
TERRY–NORA® Method
Color • Sound • Space • Nervous System
A neurophysiological framework that examines how sensory environments influence autonomic nervous system responses.
NeuroMethod AL® System
Nervous System • Artificial Intelligence • Load Analysis
A system designed to analyze sensory load, environmental influences, and recovery factors through neurophysiological principles and AI-supported assessment models.
Research Philosophy
Both methods are based on measurable physiological responses, observable sensory processes, and interdisciplinary scientific research rather than personal opinions or purely artistic interpretations.
The objective is to provide educators, artists, organizations, therapists, designers, and researchers with practical tools for understanding how color, sound, light, rhythm, and visual environments influence human well-being, cognitive performance, and nervous system regulation.
